Premarin

Premarin is usually prescribed to menopausal women who suffer from vaginal dryness and other menopause symptoms and who are not able to produce enough female hormone anymore.

Estrogen-containing drugs should be used carefully due to cancer risk. Taking estrogen for an extended period may increase the chance of endometrial cancer and cancer of breast in menopausal women. It may also occasionally cause heart disease if taken together with progestin. To decrease the chance of serious diseases and to avoid side effects, Premarin should be taken for the shortest period possible in minimum dose.

Using of this drug is not recommended to pregnant women because it may harm human fetus. Estrogen should be taken carefully in case of some special medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal calcium level in the blood, depression, endometriosis, vaginal bleeding cholesterol problems, allergies and depression. Anyway you should consult a doctor or pharmacist before taking Premarin.

Directions

Before taking this drug you should carefully read the patient leaflet enclosed. It is strongly recommended to follow the prescription given by your doctor.

Each dose should be taken at the same time each day. If you miss your dose, try to take medicine as soon as possible. Never take 2 doses simultaneously.

Fill the applicator with the drug then insert it high into vagina. Release the drug by pressing the plunger of the applicator.

To clean the applicator use warm soapy water but not hot water or boiling. Store your medicine in dry place at a room temperature. Keep it away from heat, moisture and light.

Cautions

Notify your doctor immediately when you feel that taking this medicine causes sickness. Keep watching your body constantly while using Premarin. Pass physical examination once a year. It is recommended to have blood pressure measurements, breast examinations, Papanicolaou test and mammogram.

This drug may affect ability to drive and perform some other tasks. Sometimes taking Premarin causes dizziness. It is recommended to abstain from drinking alcohol or at least reduce its amount. Cigarette smoking may result in blood clots while using this drug. Avoid staying in the sunlight for a long time as it may cause melasma. Try to protect your skin from the reach of solar beams using protective cloths and sunburn cream. Keep your doctor informed if you take this drug before surgery. Consult a doctor before having sex because taking premarin can weaken latex condoms. Ask your doctor to select special condoms or some other safe sex vaginal products. This drug should not be taken by pregnant women. Notify your doctor in case of unscheduled pregnancy.

Possible side effects

Consult your doctor, nurse or pharmacist in case of any side effects appearing during using of Premarin. Possible side effects of taking this medicine are as follows:

• dizziness
• headache
• bloating
• weight loss/access weight
• depression
• nausea
• pain swelling
• stomach upset
• allergic reactions

If you take too much

Overdose may result in vomiting and vaginal bleeding. Contact emergency room or poison control center in case if overdose taking happened. Do not swallow this medicine, it is only for vaginal use.
